J Is For Jellyfish

Oregon Coast Aquarium 7

It's time again for ABC Wednesday. If you aren't participating in ABC Wednesday, you are missing out on a lot of fun.

This week the letter is J. J is for jellyfish. Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Here a a few photos I have taken of Jellyfish.

In countries like Japan, Korea and China, it is considered a delicacy to eat Jellyfish. I don't think that I would eat them.

In the Artic Sea, the North Atlantic Sea and Northern Pacific Ocean lives a Jellyfish that can grow to over 120 feet long. It is the Lion's Mane Jellyfish, the largest known Jellyfish in the world.

Here is a short video I have shot of Jellyfish

I hope you have enjoyed this weeks installment of ABC Wednesday. See you next week!

  5. I am so impressed with your photos and your video! I would be frightened to get that close to them! I remember teaching kids all about these creatures when I was teaching Oceanography to 4th graders and they were fascinated by them. We watched a Bill Nye the Science Guy video and I have to say your photos and video are better than those ones were. Have a jolly good week,

  7. They are fascinating but, like you, I think I'd avoid eating one (or even two)! :)

  8. No I wouldn't like one of those served on a plate, they are much prettier in the water, Beautiful photos. At certain times of the year Portuguese Man of War float in numbers through the sea channel here, amazing sight (from the safety of the bridge).

  10. Super photos, Richard. You must have been nearer the jellyfish than I have any desire to be.

  11. I used to work over at Sea World a few years back and many a times I would take a short cut through the saltwater Aquarium after I gotten off from my post and then usually spend about 10 to 15 minutes watching the Jelly Fish, they swim so gracefully, and are very fasinating creatures to watch.

I would think that eating Jelly fish would be rather slimy, no thank you not in my mouth.

Enjoy your photos, they are great for the letter J post.

  13. Great photos and an excellent video. The way those jellyfish move is hypnotising. Was the blue background there or did you add it later?

  14. Oh are those cool! My daughter and I were in England and went to visit a famous castle by the sea. The water around it was literally pink with jellyfish. This reminded me of that although your photos look surreal!
    Great post!

  16. Outstanding photos and a great video. Fascinating.
While sailing in the Indian Ocean (Arabian Sea) the sea was full of Jellyfish, the bell was brown and hard. We found out it was Crambionella Orsini.
